The Challenge
Remodeling a U-shaped galley kitchen with multiple entry points presented a unique set of challenges that required careful planning and execution. Our primary challenge was how to maximize the existing space while eliminating bottlenecks, especially with multiple entries disrupting the kitchen’s layout. Without compromising the usability of the space, balancing functionality and aesthetic was our highest priority. We strategically integrated essential appliances and storage solutions throughout the kitchen to distribute high-usage areas, allowing the entire space to be used more efficiently.
The Vision
The vision for the design was to utilize mid-century straight lines and special feature elements to offer timeless sophistication and understated elegance. We wanted straight lines prominently featured throughout the space, offering a sense of order and simplicity. In order to infuse the space with character and charm, we included special feature elements such as LED lighting, iconic furniture pieces, and natural walnut which added personality and depth to the design.
The Solution
Light-colored material selections were used to draw the eye upward and create a sense of airiness. To add contrast, we used natural walnut to ground the space and channel the home’s existing mid-century aesthetic. Appliances were reconfigured to maximize the flow. We added wraparound floating shelves with a vertical LED light feature to break up the wall of cabinetry and create visual interest.
The Results
Creating a space that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly contemporary, the result is a meticulously curated interior that pays homage to the iconic design principles of the mid-century era while incorporating modern comforts and amenities. We were able to honor the homeowners’ desire to preserve the U-shaped galley kitchen while increasing functionality and efficiency. The thoughtful blend of past and present elements ensures that the space not only honors its design roots but also offers a welcoming and stylish kitchen for our homeowners.
