The Challenge
This residential home had an adequate backyard space that was outdated and becoming less than functional for hosting. With an existing deck space that was deteriorating, a new gathering space was a must. Overgrown plant material obstructed views and enclosed the space further. Large patches of dirt along the fenceline proved to be an eyesore.
The Vision
Create a new backyard gathering space that provides multiple gathering spaces of different functions while integrating new landscape beds and plant material to bring new beauty and privacy in desired areas.
The Solution
Create an entirely new concept suitable for large gatherings and manageable landscape elements. Removing unwanted and outdated existing structures allowed us to lay the groundwork for a fresh start. We envisioned and created an elevated patio design that maximized space while offering different viewpoints, adding a dynamic dimension to their backyard experience. By defining the patio into distinct functional areas, we were able to tailor choice of material and elements to suit specific purposes, creating practicality and aesthetic coherence. The large focal point of the space being a covered seating area that provided a cozy experience for users that can be utilized during inclement weather. Dedicating another portion of the patio to a grilling and dining section allows for easy hosting abilities and entertainment opportunities. To soften the new hardscape elements of this backyard, we integrated numerous landscape beds around and within the patio. To address the fenceline aesthetic problems, we extended an existing landscape bed and brought in new plant material to match landscape beds that are patio-side. This thoughtful decision contributed to a sense of unity throughout the whole backyard.
The Results
A new beautiful outdoor gathering space that meets their hosting needs and serves as an extension of their home’s interior. Fostering a new love for the exterior of their home and inviting users to enjoy more time outside.
