Project Details
The Challenge
When the homeowners started this project, they had lots of unused space and spaces with too much clutter. This home had a formal dining room attached to the kitchen that was too small, an informal dinette that was too big and lacked storage, and two family rooms that were too large for the empty nesters. The homeowners wanted a space to host large family gatherings but also still feel lived in and welcoming.
The Vision
To make the best use of the space the homeowners and their designer Jamie with JOCO Design Studio laid out an exciting new plan. Taking the previously small dining room and too-large living rooms to repurpose them into exactly what the client needed. Adding in extra pantry storage was also a must but needed to be done efficiently and look beautiful as there wasn’t room for a hidden style pantry.
The Solution
Utilizing the current layout was not possible to meet the homeowners wishes. 1st by taking the old dining room and creating a lovely dinette area with lots of pantry cabinetry took care of the lack of storage options. Then by extending the kitchen into the old dinette space giving them additional seating while making the kitchen large enough for any home chef to be envious of. Finally by using the large front formal room as a dining room the clients were able to have space for a large family dining table fit for every member of the family plus some. Jamie created the idea of “mini scale open concept” where you have a clear division of space but many of the spaces still have views to all of the other spaces in the home.
The Results
By using warm whites, bold oak finishes and black metal accents, this space really creates the vision of lived-in warmth. A place where you can always call home. With plenty of storage, seating and conservation areas this home is a perfect place to come back to everyday.
By connecting spaces but still having clear division made this project a perfect example of how the homeowners live their lives: perfectly imperfect.
